For the senshi, this story takes place sometime between "Treed" and "Serena times two" in the Sailor Moon R series. ==== Serena trained and trained, fighting monsters and learning techs. Magic Absorb, Lunar Boost, Moon Energy, Peep, Change Form, Toad, Pig, Sleep, Meteor. Serena looked vastly different from the clumsy, uncouth fourteen-year-old who entered this world on April Fool's Day, 1999. Now, she had an air of delicate concentration and immense power, which gave one the impression that she had something to hide. "This is better than I expected!" Spekkio said, watching her progress from the end of time. "Pity she has to leave us so soon, she might just be more powerful than he is..." ---- Every day, Magus marked his calendar before going to bed. The big day was marked "Revenge." Finally, the day came. July 15th, 1999... ---- The ground shook. KnightShade and Akira gathered the other red dragons, as well as the time travelers and the senshi. The seventeen of them left the relative safety of New Guardia, and walked out to the clearing just outside of town. Suddenly, a huge crack opened in the ground. As the seventeen fighters made a large ring around the crack, something emerged from the crack, something very, very large. It resembled a cyclopean hedgehog at least twice the size of a city block. It opened its mouth and made a horrible whining, growling, gurgling noise that could be heard for miles around. As it rose, an evil light shot skyward. Then, the huge creature stopped and looked straight at Crono. It roared again and knocked Crono backwards. Regaining his feet, he drew his Rainbow Sword. "You've destroyed civilizations and killed people we loved." Magus said, stepping forward. "Thou art an abomination," Frog chimed, "and thou must be stopped." "We've all come here to stop you, Lavos," Crono finished, "and we're going to do it now, if it's the last thing we do!" Five transformations and eight weapon draws later... Crono, Frog and Marle moved into position a few yards away from Lavos, forming a triangle. Frog crouched a few feet in front of Crono, while Marle moved a couple of yards away from them. Crono started running, and jumped onto Frog's shoulders. Frog jumped up, and at the peak of the jump, Crono leapt toward Lavos' head. Marle folded her hands as if in prayer, then shot her hands forward, firing a burning-cold ball of ice at Crono's sword. Crono thrust the Rainbow Sword into Lavos' head, just as the ice solidified around it. Crono jumped back, and the three of them moved away, allowing Lucca, Ayla and Robo to slip into position, with Robo and Ayla standing a few feet away from either side of Lavos' head. Lucca raised her left hand, and a jet of flame appeared in her open palm, spiraled around her body back into her hand. She made a throwing motion, and two jets of flame shot out at Robo and Ayla. They both slammed into Lavos' head, sandwiching it in a sudden blaze. As they moved away, the flame died. Lavos seemed undaunted. Magus, KnightShade, and Akira moved into position. KnightShade tossed his Revenge Sword into the air, and Akira Telekinetically caught it and launched it at Lavos. Magus gesticulated oddly with his hands, and a reverse-color wave of energy surrounded the sword. The sword flew into Lavos's head, surrounded by a reverse-color hemisphere of energy, similar to the one Magus caught the senshi in when they first met. Akira telekinetically pulled the sword out of Lavos' head and returned it to KnightShade. The next trio to attack was Koban, Erick and Sailor Jupiter. Erick pressed a button on his Personal Laser Cannon, and a small, baseball-sized sphere dropped out of a port on its side. He passed the sphere to Jupiter, who held it in the air and shouted, "Jupiter... Thunder... Crash!" A bolt of lightning struck the bomb, charging it with electricity. She handed it to Koban who threw it at Lavos' head. The bomb exploded in Lavos' face, hitting him with the combined force of 20 pounds of dynamite and 300 volts of electricity. Lavos hardly looked scratched. "Shouldn't Lavos be attacking by now?" Serena asked KnightShade. "If you had spent the last 65 million years tunneling through the earth," KnightShade replied, "you'd be tired too." Sailors Venus, Mercury, and Mars attacked next. They formed themselves into a delta, and Mercury said, "Mercury... Bubbles...," forming a large bubble in the middle. Venus raised her right arm, and pointed at the bubble, saying, "Venus... Crescent Beam..." A golden crescent formed in the center of the bubble, spinning like a gyroscope. Mars clasped her hands, index fingers pointed at the bubble, then said, "Mars... Fire..." A fireball appeared in the bubble, forming a flame contained in a golden Gyroscope suspended in a large soap bubble. "Blast!" Mercury shouted, as Venus shouted "Smash!" and Mars yelled "Ignite!" The bubble crashed into Lavos' face. By now, Lavos was beginning to look bruised. Next, Sailor Moon and Sandra moved into position in front of Lavos. Sailor Moon closed her eyes, crossed her arms above her head, and began chanting quietly. A sphere of energy appeared at the point where her arms were crossed. Sandra pursed her lips and whistled, almost inaudibly. A gentle breeze formed around her, flipping the ends of her hair up. Serena opened her eyes and shouted "Meteor!" as she threw her arms apart. Sandra whistled sharply, clapped her hands once, and a gale-force wind, laced heavily with sand, flew towards Lavos. The sandy wind spun around in a miniaturized tornado. A strange noise came from the air, and a large shadow was cast upon the assemblage. Everyone except Lavos, Sandra and Sailor Moon looked up, and saw something that almost made them lose control of their bodily functions: a huge meteor was heading straight down at them. The sandy vortex flew up to meet the meteor and covered it in a sphere. The meteor slammed into Lavos' head with such force that it knocked everyone present to the ground. When the dust cleared, everyone peered at Lavos. He had a huge gash in his forehead, and he was cross-eyed. He shook his head for a second, then roared. Flames fell from the sky like drops of melted wax at the two girls. "Chaos rains from the heavens," Crono said, numbly. Magus drew an invisible mark in the air in front of him with his finger. When the flames died away, Sandra and Sailor Moon were unharmed, although a little shaken up. Lavos snorted, and swiped at Sailor Moon's head. She fell backwards with a weak cry, and blood trickled out of her mouth. The other heroes ran over to her side. Lita kneeled down next to her. "Serena!" she shouted to the limp form lying on the ground. Koban poked carefully at her body, and said calmly, "Her neck's been snapped, and all of her ribs are broken." "Can't you heal her?" Mina pleaded. "She's too far gone," Marle said, on the verge of tears. "The same thing happened to Schala," Magus said bitterly, "and Marle couldn't heal her." Marle shot a look at Magus that seemed to say, "Must you bring that up again?" Lita walked over to Sandra and grabbed her by the neck. "If you don't do something," she hissed, "I'll break her leg!" KnightShade walked up to Lita, and stared her in the eyes. "Put Sandra down!" he commanded. "Breaking her leg won't bring Serena back, Lita!" Lita let Sandra go. She folded her arms, and thrust her chin up defensively. "Fine!" The group stepped away from Serena's body, and Akira closed her eyes. Serena's body levitated off of the ground and over to a park bench. Suddenly, there was a scream, and a sickening crunch. Everyone turned towards the sound. Sandra was trapped under Lavos' huge claw and was being dragged towards his gaping maw. A lightning bolt struck the claw, paralyzing it. "Sandra!" Koban shouted, running over to her still, unmoving body. Turning towards Lita, he shouted, "Get her out from under it, Lita!" Lita scowled at Koban, then said, "You wouldn't help Serena, so why should I help you?" "Damn it, Lita!" "No! I won't!" Koban looked at the ground. The sky darkened, as if the sun itself refused to be a party to the drama that was unfolding. Koban looked up. The fire in his eyes had died, and he looked at Sandra's body, then at Serena's, with the expression of a man who had given up. Running over to the bench where Serena's body lay, Koban reached for the locket on her chest and removed it. As he pulled the crystal from the locket and held it up, it glowed. Koban looked at Mina, Ami, and Rei. "Is this the famous Silver Empirium Crystal?" he asked them, his voice laced with impatience. "Yes," Rei said, her voice shaking with an almost primal fear. "How do I use it?" "Let out your soul," Rei began warily, "open up your mind, and the crystal shall take effect." Koban gripped the crystal in both hands and closed his eyes. He began to chant something inaudibly to himself. "I want everyone that Lavos has killed to be alive again," he said out loud. The crystal glowed as if in answer, and there was a flash of light. ---- At the end of time, Spekkio watched the scene with intense interest. Then, he felt a presence in his chamber. "Gaspar," he said to the bearded, hooded man who entered the room, without turning away. "Spekkio," Gaspar said. "Now is the time." "The time is now." "I sense reality has been changed, but not this reality." "If I allowed the girl to return to her world, would it affect her reality?" "Yes. Dramatically." "I shall take care of it before returning her to her world." ---- The light faded, nothing had changed. Koban was still staring at the Silver Crystal, tears of anger and sadness in his eyes. Serena was still lying on the park bench, the trickle of blood had dried. Sandra was still trapped under Lavos' limp, paralyzed claw. The other heroes were gathered in a circle around Koban. Koban looked towards where Serena was lying, and made a small gesture that made everyone look at her. For a minute, nothing happened. Suddenly, Serena coughed, then sat up. She coughed several times, until she spat up a large blood clot. Looking at it, she grimaced. "What happened?" Serena said, standing up and stretching and yawning. "Did I fall asleep?" Magus looked at her, bemused. "No, you di--" Marle elbowed Magus in the stomach, cutting him off. "Yeah. Lavos breathed something on you, and you passed out." "HEY!" Sandra's voice came from behind the group. "Can someone get this claw thing offa me?!?" Akira turned around and smiled. "Sure." She bowed her head and closed her eyes, and the claw rose up and redeposited itself several feet away from where Sandra lay. A new voice said "What in blazes?" It was the voice of a young woman, one which Magus remembered from what seemed to be a long time ago. Magus turned toward the voice, and his eyes widened. He saw a lovely young woman, about twenty-odd years old, wearing a light blue dress which matched her hair. She radiated an aura of intense power similar to Serena's. "Schala!" Magus finally emitted after what seemed like an eternity. Schala stared at Magus for a few seconds, then smiled with recognition. "Is that you, Janus? You've--grown so since I last saw you. You're so, so," she gestured with her arms for a moment, "tall! When I saw you last, you were only this tall!" She said, placing her hand just below her chest. She ran over to Magus, and hugged him. "I've missed you more than you can imagine, sister," Magus said under his breath. Nobody seemed to notice, but Koban and the Senshi were changed. Koban's features were more feral than human, and the senshi each had their respective planet's astrological symbols tattooed onto their upper arms. Koban's outfit was black instead of dark gray. "Uh, Koban..." KnightShade began, "When did you change your suit's colors?" Koban looked at his now-black suit and said, "What? I've always worn black." "Seemed to me you used to wear dark grey," KnightShade said, then muttered to himself: "Must be goin' color blind or somethin'." ---- Meanwhile, back at the end of time... Gaspar and Spekkio watched what was happening silently. Finally, Spekkio spoke. "It is done," he said calmly. "There is nothing more we can do." "Their reality has been destroyed. The best we can do is hope that something close replaces it..." ---- Koban returned the Silver Crystal to Serena, then drew his sword, saying, "Now that everything is back to normal, let's kill Lavos!" Magus and Schala, who had been whispering to each other for the past couple of minutes, beckoned for Serena to join them. They huddled, talking quietly. When they finished, they formed an attack position in front of Lavos. They began simultaneously chanting, and moving their hands in strange patterns. Magus shouted, "Dark Matter!" and a triangle of grey and white energy flipped through the space in front of them. Schala shouted "Crystal Spark!" and a million points of light coalesced into an ethereal diamond of energy, which disappeared. Serena shouted "Meteor!" and created a large meteor. All three shouted "Royal Crush!" simultaneously, completing the spell. An enormous diamond made from rocks and dark energy appeared above Lavos' head. The crystal divided into many shards, which flew away into the air, only to dive back at his head at a supersonic speed. The shards sunk themselves deep into his flesh, leaving bloody wounds all around his head. Magus then said, "now," and Lavos' head exploded. Everyone gasped. Koban popped the cork on a bottle of champagne which had found its way into his hands, and filled the wine glasses that everyone was suddenly holding. The sun came out, like a child confident that the scary part of a television show was over. Magus poked Lavos' body with his Doom Sickle, and it crumbled into dust. A strange vertical wind blew the dust up and into space, sending it somewhere where it could never bring harm to another world. The heroes watched the dust's ascent, and saluted it mockingly. "Hey, everybody," KnightShade said, "Let's go out for a celebratory lunch! Order anything you want, 'cause I'm paying!" Everybody walked toward town, making sure to avoid Lavos' hole, which was already sealing itself up. ---- Koban was happy. He opened his eyes and looked out the window, seeing a beautiful ray of sunlight coming through the window. Koban was very happy. He jumped out of bed and tore off another day on his calendar. August 17th. Sandra's birthday. Thirty-one days since what would have been referred to as "the Apocalypse" or "the Day of Lavos," but was instead called "the Day of Salvation, the Day Everything Changed." Although nobody on this planet would ever know it, the latter was to be more true for the Senshi than for the people of this world. Koban was very, very happy. The day after he and the other heroes destroyed Lavos, he had confessed his love to Sandra, the most beautiful girl in his world. Koban was almost ridiculously happy. He took a shower and sang "Good Day Sunshine" by the Beatles. It's true, he thought as he sang. I'm in love and it's a sunny day. Koban got out of the shower and dressed in his best Ninja suit. After getting dressed, he reached into his closet and removed a small, carefully wrapped box. Koban thought back about what had happened over the past month. On the 20th, Lucca, Ami and Robo finally finished repairing the Epoch and the time travelers had gone back home to their home eras, taking Erick with them. The Senshi were still there, but neither he nor the rest of the Red Dragons minded. Koban walked down the hall and was about to enter the kitchen of the venerable mansion that served as the Red Dragons' base of operations when he stopped. Returning to his bedroom, he picked up another, larger package from his night stand. He removed the small, black case from the box and opened it. After looking the contents of the case over, Koban closed it and put it into one of his many pockets. At last, he went into the kitchen. Akira was sitting at the table, mixing the frosting for Sandra's birthday cake like a veritable Kasumi Tendo. Koban took a bottle of Henry Weinhard's Root Beer from the refrigerator. Taking a pull from the bottle, he said, "How long have you been up?" Akira looked up from the frosting and said, cheerily, "Since about, um..." she looked up at the clock on the wall. "Four AM." "Four AM!?!" Koban nearly shouted, then looked at the clock, which only read six. *I thought it was after eight,* he thought. "How can I help?" he said, regaining his composure. Akira stood up, and put a small glass jar next to the bowl. "Stir this into the frosting until it turns green." Koban sat down and picked up the jar. "*Bata-ha*" he said to himself, looking at the crushed purple leaves. "Butter-leaf. Sandra's favorite herb, grows only in the desert. Said to give one a long life, and restore the happiness of youth to a heavy soul." He sprinkled the dried herb into the frosting, then stirred. The frosting changed from a cream color to lavender, and finally to a deep green that matched the color of Sandra's eyes. Akira opened the oven door, and tested the cake to see if it was ready. The serene smell of chocolate filled the kitchen. Suddenly, Serena burst into the kitchen, guided by her stomach and possessed by the smell of the chocolate cake. She rushed to the oven, but Koban managed to hold her in place with one hand. "Serena," Koban whispered, "Promise me this: One, you will not make a sound, and Two--don't eat the cake before it's done baking. All right?" "Uh huh," Serena murmured, still groggy. "Good girl. Now have some cereal and watch TV. Stay out of the kitchen. I'll let you have seconds if you keep it down" Suddenly, there was a loud crashing sound, followed by the sound of voices arguing in the hall. Ami, Lita, Mina, and Rei entered the kitchen in an unhurried manner, grabbed some bowls, a box of corn flakes, and a jug of milk, and went into the living room, with Serena in tow. A few minutes later, KnightShade entered, wearing a semi-dressy outfit. Akira saw this, and froze in her tracks, blinking as if stunned. KnightShade almost *never* wore anything other than his armor, except on very special occasions. Akira opened up the oven, and removed the cake, putting it on a cooling rack. About 15 minutes later, Akira spread the butter-leaf frosting on the cake, and Koban wrote out "Happy Birthday Sandra" on it in light blue icing. KnightShade quickly decorated the cake with several small red roses, and placed eighteen candles in concentric circles on the cake. They spent the next five minutes decorating the kitchen with streamers and balloons. A couple of minutes later, Sandra strolled languidly into the kitchen. The sleepy look in her eyes went away, and she was completely overwhelmed by happiness and surprise. The Senshi entered the room and sat down, while Akira cut the cake and served it, while everyone sang "Happy Birthday." After the cake was gone, and Serena had gone to take some Pepto-Bismol, Koban handed one of the gift-wrapped boxes to Sandra. She opened it and drew a beautiful gold chain with a miniature silver dagger on it from the black jewelry case. The dagger had a large amethyst, Sandra's birthstone, in the pommel, and Sandra stared at it lovingly. "May you always be protected from the darkness by the light," Koban said, smiling optimistically. Then he handed her the other box, which was larger and wrapped with bright green wrapping paper. She unwrapped the box with enthusiasm, opened it, and her eyes became as big as turkey platters. She reached into the box and pulled out a beautiful gold music box. On its top was a lovingly painted depiction of a majestic creature, with a face like a deer, a mane like a lion, scales running along its neck and body, cloven hooves, and a single, scimitar-shaped horn protruding from its forehead. "What is it?" Sandra whispered, stars in her dark green eyes. "A *Kirin,*" he answered, "a Chinese unicorn. They're supposed to be caring, beautiful, and strong. Rei told me about them, and it made me think of you." "Thank you, Koban," she said, and kissed him. "Turn the key," he said, after they finished kissing. When she did, the music box played "I've Been Searching so Long" by Chicago. "You found one that plays my favorite song!" "Yeah. I had to custom-order the mechanism." "It's wonderful. Just like you." Sandra was about to kiss Koban again when Lita ran in. "Come outside, there's something going on!" Sandra and Koban looked at each other, then stood up and left the kitchen. ---- They went outside, and froze. Everyone was gathered around what appeared to be a hole in space. It shimmered and wavered, distorting everything around it like a stone dropped into a pool of water. KnightShade walked around it, put his hand in, giggled a bit, then pulled it back. "What do ya think it is?" he said. "A dimensional vortex?" Serena said, and everyone turned and stared at her, sweatdrops rolling down the backs of their heads. "I heard it on *Sliders,* okay?" she said, flushing slightly. "It seems to be drawing me closer," the senshi said simultaneously. "It's like the call of destiny," Rei whispered. "Maybe it's our ticket home!" Mina piped in. "Let's go in!" Lita said, walking towards the vortex. The other senshi followed. They stood in the vortex, waiting for something to happen. "What's keeping it open?" KnightShade asked. Koban lowered his head, saying, "I am." Everyone gasped. "Ever since Lavos, I've had this enormous longing to move on to another place. I don't mean another city, another country, or even another continent. I wanted to see the galaxy. I guess it's just the nomad in me. I'll come back someday, when I feel that I've satisfied my traveling nature." He turned toward Sandra, who was shocked and stunned. "Dennis DeYoung wrote a song, which seems to fit this situation. Would you like me to sing it to you?" Sandra nodded. "Okay, here goes: "Babe, I'm leaving; I must be on my way; I must be on my way; My time is drawing near. "My train is going; I see it in your eyes: The love beneath your tears. "And I'll be lonely without you; and I'll need your love to see me through. "So please believe me; my heart is in your hand; and I'll be missing you. "Cause you know it's you, babe; whenever I get weary and I've had enough, feel like giving up, "You know it's you, babe; giving me the courage and the strength I need, please believe that it's true... "Babe I love you. "Babe, I'm leaving; I'll say it once again; and somehow try to smile. "I know the feeling we're trying to forget; if only for a while. "I'll be lonely without you; and I'll need your love to see me through. "So please believe me; my heart is in your hand; and I'll be missing you. "Babe I love you. "Babe I love you. "Oooooh, babe." By the time Koban had finished, everyone was crying. Even KnightShade's normally stony face had tears coming down it. "Your singing is so beautiful, Koban," Sandra said, weeping. She wrapped her arms around him, and kissed him. Koban broke away, and walked slowly toward the vortex. Just before stepping inside, he reached under his Ninja suit's top, removed something, and threw it to Sandra. He entered the vortex, turned around, blew a kiss at Sandra, and was gone. KnightShade and Akira turned and left, leaving Sandra alone. Sandra looked at the object in her hands. It was a golden, egg-shaped locket. She opened it, and inside was a picture of Sandra on one side, and one of Koban on the other. Sandra fell to her knees and wept. ==== We hope you enjoyed reading Sailor Trigger part 3: the Day of Lavos as much as we have enjoyed writing it.
