FAQ

till asking questions, are you? Just can't get enough Haven? Or are you just bored out of your skull, reading anything to pass the time?

(Note: I have never actually been asked any of these questions, but on the chance that someday, somebody shows any interest in this project, I'll answer them now.)

Q:What is Haven's Saga?
A:I answered that on the front page, didn't I? Haven's Saga is a quintet of video games depicting the Saga of the world known as Haven. See, it's a clever title.

Q:How many of those games are available now?
A:0

Q:Working on the first one now then?
A:Nope. We're working on the second game. (One of the advantages of planning an entire series from the get go is that you can number them properly, instead of counting backwards like Lufia.)

Q:Okay, so eventually there will be five games involving this world known as Haven.
A:Wrong again. There will eventually be at least nine.

Q:Nine is not a quintet.
A:Aha, but Haven's Saga only has five chapters. Haven's Legacy has three more, and there's a spinoff as well, and will probably be a second one just as a goof.

Q:Shouldn't we be discussing the game that you're making right now? Isn't that the topic of this FAQ?
A:Sure it is. You asked about Haven's Saga though, so I answered. And now on to the questions regarding of Light and Darkness.

Q:So, what's it about?
A:It's about the second chapter of the Saga of the world known as Haven.

Q:Very funny.
A:More specifically, it details the events of the so-called "Time of Trial", which was a pretty major period in Haven's history. (As if we'd make a game about a boring period...)

Q:How does the game play?
A:Much like the genre currently referred to as "RPG". I'd prefer to call it a cinematic adventure with strategy and RPG overtones, but that's just me.

Q:So, what's the plot about?
A:1000 years ago, a great evil force was sealed beyond reality by the great sages because it wanted to destroy the world. As time passed, the people came to forget the old legends, and the seal on the Dark One weakened. Monsters began to appear in the night, and rumors hinted that the Empire was beginning to subjugate nearby towns, and enslave the people. The citizens of Roc's home town thought that no one would ever bother with an insignificant settlement such as theirs, but one night, Roc awoke to the sounds of tortured screams, and found his town in flames, set upon by the Empire. Something snapped within him at the sight of the destruction, and unleashed an incredible power, with which he vanquished the Empire's troops. Although the town had been saved, the people became frightened of Roc's power, and banished him. Thus, his journey begins...

Q:That's the plot?
A:No, that's the plot of a game created by "professional" game designers that you're expected to pay $49.95 for. When I was nine, I took a class on creative writing, so I'm capable of coming up with something better.

Q:So what's the real plot about then?
A:The most I can tell you is that it involves the world of Haven during the Time of Trial, which was a period of considerable upheaval and chaos. The main focus of the game goes to a handful of people who lived and died during this time, although it never looses sight of the bigger picture. This game will introduce Haven, and rest assured, it's a big and detailed place, since we are setting four more games in it.

Q:How long will the game be?
A:I don't know. I'd love to make it as long as Xenogears, but if it comes up short, I'm not going to try to extend it. Better to be short and sweet than drawn out and boring. The replay option potentially doubles the playable life of the game anyway.

Q:Replay?
A:If you're familiar with Chrono Trigger, think Newgame+. You can play the game again from the beginning with your end game party, but this time around things might be a little...different.

Q:How does the character system work?
A:It's fairly complex on the inside, but comes through the UI in a simpler form. The idea is to be fairly open as far as character development goes, but without running afoul of the statless clone and/or eventual godly power issues of the lastest Final Fantasies. Basically, how each character develops is up to you, but they can never be super human, and they can't exceed their own limitations. It's sort of a combination of Ultima Online and Diablo II, to put it in current terms. Each character has their own skills and development potential, but it's up to you to decide what exactly what to do.

Q:What about this component system you've been touting?
A:Quite simply, every major piece of equipment a character wears will be visible in battle. (Though not on the field. Not only would that be seriously stretching VERGE at best, it would be way too much artwork for our meager team to produce) For those who prefer more unique character appearances, I'm planning to include an option not to use the component system in favor of the characters' default clothing/armor. The current weapon is visible regardless.
